why Japanese don't loot and a fun link

Share/Bookmark

Good reads

:: Want to know why there was hardly any looting in Japan after the terrible earthquake and tsunami that devastated the north-east in March? Read this article in Slate: Stop Thief! Thank You. Among the reasons might be official financial incentives given to people who return lost items, a practice that is inculcated into them from a young age. GOOD magazine, quoting police estimates, reported that Japanese citizens had turned in $78 million in cash and valuables found amid the rubble. Fascinating.

:: A different kinda link, a fun one. Check out the drunken handiwork of partygoers at GOOD magazine's launch party for its upcoming new issue. The theme of the issue is data, so GOOD got its guests to do draw some infographics based on templates it'd made. The gallery's at the post The Best Drunken, Hand-Drawn Infographics. You can vote for your favorite, too. Mine was down to Driving Across America by Cross-Country Drives and Drawing Circles by Dr Horrible. I voted Circles. (Driving in Circles - that could be me...)

typography: PBS Off Books, Noodlor on type

more on typography ... a video and an infographic

[ read my earlier post on type and fonts ]

A short PBS film on typography, on the pervasiveness of type around us and interviews with some font designers.

Off Book | Typography | PBS Arts

A short description of the film

Type is everywhere. Every print publication, website, movie, advertisement and public message involves the creation or selection of a fitting typeface. Online, a rich and artistic typographical culture exists, where typefaces are created and graphic design seeps in to every image.

In episode 2 of Off Book, typeface designers Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones outline the importance of selecting the right font to convey a particular feeling. Graphic designer Paula Scher talks about building identity in messaging, while Eddie Opara uses texture to create reaction. Infographic designers Julia Vakser and Deroy Peraza map complicated data sets into digestible imagery, mixing color, graphics and type.

Cashing in on county fairs

Share/Bookmark

I love fairs although I don't get to go to many because they are not very common where I live. I love to see all the food, entertainment and how people interact. There's something about fairs that I think just makes people loosen up. Here's an infographic on how small businesses can cash in on county fairs, which supposedly encourage a "buy local" mentality. I wonder how traveling fairs fit in? I like the history and all those numbers in the infographic (haven't written any facts posts for a while, I'm missing it).

medical bills and what the doctor ordered

Share/Bookmark

drugged up doctors and rising healthcare costs (medicalbillingandcoding.org)

One reason why your medical bills are going up: Pharmaceutical companies have not only been wooing doctors with gifts, bribes, and incentives, but also been paying doctors vast amounts of dollars to promote certain products. And medics are grabbing the offers. That's why you are prescribed expensive drugs rather than cheaper generics. No wonder it's possible for drug prices to go up as much as 8 per cent a year.

The cosy relationship between doctors and pharmaceutical companies is nothing really new of course, but this infographic from medicalbillingandcoding.org recreates in a great visual way those unhealthy ties.

How US federal government spends tax dollars: interactive guide

Share/Bookmark

I posted an interactive infographic from TurboTax two weeks ago that shows how the US federal government has spent tax revenues over a decade. Today, I saw this interactive tax receipt guide from the White House which I thought may be of use to some of you. Just enter some information about your taxes, and the  taxpayer receipt will break down the numbers for you and show how your tax dollars are  spent on things like  education, defence, health care and jobs.

It ranked as the joint fourth largest earthquake in the world since 1900 and was nearly 8,000 times stronger than the 6.3 quake that devastated Christchurch, New Zealand, in February 2011, and killed about 165 people.
